Get a second view

Sometimes it's wise to get a second opinion after a mechanic has determined that a certain problem with your car is too complicated or too expensive. A second opinion is a good idea to ensure the mechanic diagnoses the problem correctly and you don't end up paying for unnecessary repairs. A second opinion can be helpful in situations where a mechanic is not fully honest or has little experience.

Take action

You can sue your mechanic if they don't solve the problem. This can be taken for a variety of reasons. You may sue the mechanic for not properly fixing your car. Or, you might believe that the mechanic caused damage to your vehicle. It can be costly and time-consuming to file a lawsuit against an mechanic. There are many ways to resolve disputes like this without going to court.

Authorize work before you drop off your car

If your car isn't fixed in the time allotted by the mechanic, you can request that certain work be done. When dropping your vehicle off, you may want to request that specific repairs be performed or tell the mechanic that certain repairs can only be done after you have authorized the work. Authorizing work before you drop off your car is a good idea regardless of the type of repair.

Avoid mechanics who try to pass the blame on damage that could have been done elsewhere.

Ask about the reputation of any mechanic you visit. While it's not a good idea to trust a mechanic to fix damage that could have occurred elsewhere, you will want a mechanic to put the customer's best interests first. Look for online reviews to make sure a mechanic has a good reputation.
