FAQ

What does it matter which college I attend?

Not really. There's no difference between colleges regarding getting into the automotive industry. There are some schools that offer more specific programs than others.

What kind of car mechanic jobs exists?

Three main areas of employment are available for car mechanics:

  • Automotive repair shops
  • Dealerships
  • Independent garages

Automotive repair shops

Most people think of this as the first step to becoming a mechanic. This is the best way to get started. Either work for someone else's shop or you can start your own.

If you choose to work at a store, you need to join a union. Once you're accepted into the union, you'll receive training from the union.

Once the training is completed, you can start working.

Registering with the government is required if you intend to open a garage. After registering, you'll be required to meet certain standards.

Once you register, you'll receive a license that allows you to operate your garage.

You can sell spare parts or do minor repairs with your license. You can't fix major engine problems with your license.

Apart from selling spare parts, customers will also expect you to provide guidance and advice.

Dealership jobs

Most dealerships employ mechanics who specialize in one area of the car. For instance, they may only be qualified to fix brakes or change tires.

Some dealerships hire general mechanics to handle all aspects of car repair.

Many of these positions require that applicants undergo training before they are allowed to work. This means employers can choose which candidates are best suited for their role.

Some dealerships will hire graduates straight from college. These graduates already know the basics of mechanical engineering and therefore have no problem learning about cars.

Independent garages

Independent garages do not belong to any dealership. They tend to be focused on high-quality service.

Independent garages don't have to be associated with any particular company. This allows them to offer higher wages. This means that these jobs are usually more lucrative than those at dealerships.

But this doesn't mean that independent garages are necessarily better places to work. Many owners prefer to control their businesses themselves, rather than delegating it to employees.

You may find yourself working for long hours and not having control over the day.

It is also possible to expect lower wages than you would if working at a dealer.

The good news? You can easily switch between different types of jobs. To work at a dealership you will need to contact your employer to see if he is open to the idea of hiring you.

Alternativly, you can apply directly to the garage owner if you are interested in working at an independent garage.

The bad news is that finding a new job isn't always easy. You can earn more depending on many other factors.

Consider, for example, what type of vehicle you are repairing and whether additional labor charges will apply.

Is it hard being a mechanic apprentice

It's not simple, but you can learn quickly and there are many avenues for advancement.

You must be patient and persistent. It is also important to know how you can fix vehicles, trucks, or motorcycles.

Customers and relatives can exert a lot on you. You shouldn't feel pressured to make decisions that you don't like.

If you like fixing cars, this could be a great career option. It is a job you can get a decent salary for and help build your business.

You might choose to take a different route. Consider becoming a technician.

This requires you to use your technical expertise in support of other workers. You could help technicians troubleshoot problems or teach them new techniques.

Another option is to be a service advisor. When customers bring their cars into a garage, they will receive advice and assistance.

Your decision will be based on what your priorities are. There are plenty of options available, and you can choose which suits you best.

How do I fix my car for a hobby?

Take up a hobby in car repair if you have an interest. You can learn to fix them, buy them parts, and even sell them. If you are looking for something more, it would be an excellent hobby.

It isn't easy to turn it into a full time job. It requires a lot of hard work and dedication. Also, you will need to put a lot of money into it.

You may not be able to have an emotional connection with cars unless there is a valid reason.

How To

How to become an automotive technician

A technician who works on vehicles is an automotive technician. He/she can be found at auto shops, garages and service centers. He/she assists customers in fixing their cars, trucks or motorcycles. An automotive technician must have the ability to quickly diagnose and fix problems.

A person who wants to work as an automotive technician should first obtain an associate degree from a vocational school. After completing this program the student must pass the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence exam (ASE). ASE stands as American Society of Mechanical Engineers. Two sections make up the ASE certification examination. The first section tests your mechanical skills, while the second tests your practical knowledge. You will need to attend an authorized testing site in order to pass the test. These locations can be found online or at your local auto dealer.

After passing the test, a candidate must pass an examination in order to be licensed as an automotive technician. This process is different depending on where you live. Some states require that applicants attend a training class, while others allow them freedom to study at their own pace. Some states permit technicians to work immediately after they are granted their license. Others require them to wait at least six consecutive months before they can be licensed.

To get started as an automotive technician, a person should apply to a local automotive dealership. Most new employees begin as apprentices once they are hired. Apprenticeships last for three years. Students learn basic repair skills such as changing oil and adjusting brakes, changing tires, cleaning spark plugs and inspecting engine compartments. Some students are taught how to repair engines and replace transmission fluids. Many schools offer classes during normal business hours. However, there are some schools that offer evening classes for those who need them.

Once a student finishes his/her apprenticeship, it is possible to become a Journeyman. Journeymen generally spend four- to five decades learning how to fix major systems like transmissions. Journeymen also learn to fix complicated problems, such as rebuilding engines or troubleshooting electric components. Many employers prefer to hire Journeymen because they understand the job well.

A candidate who passes all the necessary exams and gets a license might be interested in opening his/her own business. According to Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were almost 1.7 million available jobs in the automotive mechanic field in 2010. That number was expected to grow by 18 percent from 2009 to 2020. When a candidate plans to open his/her own shop he/she should be ready to invest thousands of dollars in equipment.

Many factors affect the automotive technician's salary, including location, education, experience, and employer type. On average, an unemployed person could earn $20,000 annually. Someone who has only a highschool diploma could earn around 21,000 dollars per year. Those with an associate's degree earned approximately $24,000 per year. Technicians with a bachelor’s degree made about $27,000 annually. Masters' degree holders earn around $32,000 per annum. Salary increases are common so professionals who make less than $30,000 a year could realistically expect to earn $40,000 over the next few years.
