FAQ

What is the difference in a mechanic and an auto technician?

Both are related, but they are not the same. An automotive technician maintains cars, while a mechanic repairs them.

A mechanic should be able to do simple tasks quickly and have good manual dexterity. They should be able to accurately diagnose problems and repair them efficiently.

An automotive technician is required to have more technical knowledge than a mechanic. They must be able to read blueprints and use tools such as drills and wrenches.

They should also be capable of safely performing complex procedures. They need to be familiar with various types of engines and electrical system.

They must also understand the interplay of different parts.

As a result, a mechanic usually earns less money than an automotive technician. However, both careers offer great opportunities.

What length is an automotive course?

An automotive course is three years long.

The first year focuses on theory and learning about cars. Practical training is the second year. You will learn to drive, fix engines and perform other tasks around the car. The final year includes a placement at an auto shop. This gives you real-world experience fixing real problems.

Are you a mechanic or a technician? Do I have to study part-time?

While a degree is not required, it does help. Employers prefer candidates who have completed a full degree. This shows you have put in the work and achieved success.

But, this doesn't mean you have to stop working while studying. Some universities allow students the flexibility to finish coursework during summer vacations and resume their studies later in year. Others allow students to study part-time all year.

How long is an apprenticeship for an automotive mechanic?

The apprenticeship to become an automotive mechanic takes about three years. This includes two years at school and two years working as an apprentice. After you have completed the first year of training, you will be able to spend an additional year on-the job learning different trades. These are also the times you can attend formal courses.

The last year of your program will be spent earning qualifications and becoming certified. These include NVQs or National Vocational Qualifications. These are earned after passing exams that cover specific topics in the industry. There are also HNCs (Higher National Certificates), which cover general subjects like management, business administration, customer service, and more. City & Guilds certificates can be obtained for individuals who want to learn certain trades.

How To

How to avoid auto mechanic scams

Consumers are often victims of auto mechanic scamming. Consumers spend an average of $1,500 annually on repairs to their cars. This means that there is plenty of people willing to take advantage. But, knowing what to look for can help you avoid falling prey to scammers. Here are some tips to help you spot a scammer before they get their hands on your money.

  1. Never pay upfront. It is likely that someone will ask you to pay them upfront. It is best to ask for payment only after the work has been completed. If you have any doubts about whether something is legit, contact the Better Business Bureau (BBB), at 1-888-322-8138. They'll give you advice on how to proceed.
  2. Ask for references. It's a great way to verify that you're dealing directly with a service provider who is trustworthy. Check online reviews. You should ensure that the business you do business with has a good reputation.
  3. Conduct background checks. It is a good idea to do background checks before hiring. Check the BBB website to find out if there have been any complaints. Also, make sure that the license number of the vehicle belongs to the owner.
  4. Don't be afraid to walk away. Sometimes, even when a company appears legit they try to scam you into paying too much. If you feel taken advantage of, don’t hesitate to quit. There are many other businesses you could choose to do business with.
  5. Avoid "free" services. Many companies offer free estimates or inspections. These companies often charge high fees for additional services. Before you agree to anything, make sure you ask about any additional fees.
  6. Avoid being pressured. A company may offer you a great deal because they think they are able to charge you less than you should. It's possible that you have been pressured into buying something.
  7. Quality products are important. Look for quality parts when looking for a repair shop. If you need to replace brake pads, you don't want to go to a shop that uses cheap pads. You should instead go to a shop that is specialized in brakes.
  8. Get multiple quotes. It is important to compare prices across shops. You'll have a better chance of finding a fair price when you do so.
  9. Keep track of everything. Keep records of everything that happens during your repair. This includes all receipts, invoices, or warranties. Notify your recipient of phone numbers or addresses.
  10. Keep updated
